Wheat and maize commodity inspection and quality control

Iran Wheat and Maize Import Outlook for 2026/27: Why Commodity Inspection Matters

FAO's Latest Outlook for Iran's Grain Market

According to the latest Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) country brief, Iran's wheat import requirements for the 2026/27 marketing year are preliminarily forecast at around 3 million tonnes, approximately 25 percent below the five-year average.

By contrast, maize import requirements are expected to reach approximately 11 million tonnes, about 9 percent above average, supported by continued feed demand from the livestock and poultry sectors.

Why Does Grain Quality Matter?

Wheat and maize are strategic commodities within food and feed supply chains. Differences between contractual specifications and the actual condition of a shipment can create significant commercial and operational risks.

Depending on the commodity and contractual requirements, factors such as moisture, foreign matter, bulk density, damage, storage conditions and other quality parameters may need to be assessed.

The Role of Pre-Shipment Inspection

Pre-Shipment Inspection can help buyers verify the condition and conformity of goods before they leave the country of origin.

Quantity verification, visual checks, packaging assessment, loading supervision, document review and sampling may form part of an inspection programme depending on contractual requirements.

Why Sampling Matters in Bulk Commodities

Testing an entire bulk shipment is generally impractical. Proper sampling is therefore essential for obtaining representative information about the larger lot.

When sampling is performed correctly, laboratory results can provide a more reliable picture of the quality characteristics of the shipment.

Quality Control at Origin and Destination

Quality control may be performed at different points in the supply chain, from loading facilities and ports to destination and discharge operations.

Comparing information collected at different stages can help identify potential differences in quantity, condition or quality.

Independent Inspection and Risk Management

International grain transactions often involve buyers and sellers located far apart. Independent third-party inspection can provide technical information that supports commercial decision-making and risk management.

As wheat and maize remain important components of Iran's commodity supply chain, professional inspection, sampling and quality verification will continue to play an important role in imported grain trade.
